1 November, 1928 – The Soviet-Yemeni Friendship and Trade Agreement was signed in Sana'a, establishing normal official relations between the USSR and Yemen. The agreement was signed by the representative of the Soviet Government Mr. G.Astahov and the representative of the King of Yemen kadi Mohammed Ragib. The agreement was ratified by the Soviet Government on January 23rd, 1929 and by the King of Yemen – on June 24th, 1929. The ratification instruments were exchanged on June 24th, 1929.

31 October, 1955 – The Friendship Agreement between the Soviet Union and Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was signed in Cairo. It renewed the Sana'a Agreement of 1928 and filled it with the new political substance. According to the Agreement's article 4 "The High Contracting Parties establish diplomatic relations between their countries". On behalf of the Soviet Government the Agreement was signed by the Soviet Ambassador in Cairo Mr.D.S.Solod and on behalf of the King of Yemen – by the State Minister, Yemeni envoy in Egypt Mr. Samad Abu Taleb.

8 March, 1956 – The Trade Agreement between the Soviet Union and Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was signed in Cairo. The Trade Agreement also defined the scheme of mutual payments. On behalf of the Soviet Government the Agreement was signed by the representative of the Foreign Trade Ministry Mr. I.P.Krotov and on behalf of the King of Yemen – by the State Minister, Yemeni envoy in Egypt Mr. Samad Abu Taleb.

June 1956 – the Crown Prince of Yemen Al-Badr visited the USSR and two countries agreed upon the exchange of diplomatic representations on the level of missions.

11 July, 1956 - The Economic Assistance Agreement between the Soviet Union and Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was signed in Prague. According to the Agreement the Soviet Union pledged to help Yemen with building several economic projects (including cement works in Badjil and port of Hodeida) on favorable terms of credit. On behalf of the USSR the Agreement was signed by Mr. N.Smelov and on behalf of Yemen – by Mr. Seif Al-Islam Muhammed Al-Badr.

1956 – the military cooperation between the USSR and Yemen started.

1 October, 1962 – the Soviet Prime-Minister sent to Mr. A.As-Sallal the telegram officially recognizing the Yemeni Arab Republic, established after the Revolution of September 26th, 1962 overthrew the monarchy. The USSR was the 2nd country of the world (after the United Arab Republic) that recognized the YAR.

November 1962 – the Soviet mission in Yemen and Yemeni mission in USSR were elevated to the level of embassies.

December 1962 – the Yemeni Government appointed its ambassador in the Soviet Union.

January 1963 – the Soviet ambassador presented his credentials to Yemeni President As-Sallal.
